Healthy Foods For
Healthy Students (HB 2650)
In 2003 and 2005, Upstream Public Health with the Oregon Nutrition Policy Alliance introduced a state bill to set state nutrition standards for foods and beverages sold outside of the school meal program.
A new bill was introduced in the 2007 session and given the bill number HB 2650. Eighteen house members and seven senators signed on as sponsors. The bill passed both the House and the Senate and were signed into law. Implementation of the standards will begin in July, 2008.
Thanks so much to everyone who made this success possible. We will continue to work to make ensure the standards are implemented well, and that the school food environment continues to improve.
Hearings in the House Subcommittee for Health Policy and the Education Committee took place on February 27th and March 1st.
