Announced: February 5, 2013
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 required the USDA to establish nutrition standards for all foods and beverages sold in schools outside of meals. The new proposed standards draw on recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, existing voluntary standards implemented by schools around the country, and healthy food and beverage offerings already available. A recent Health Impact Assessment, a collaboration of Upstream Public Health, the Kids' Safe and Healthy Foods Project and the Health Impact Project, was referenced in the USDA proposal. The public is encouraged to review the proposal and to provide comments and information for consideration by USDA through www.regulations.gov. USDA will seek public comment on the proposal for 60 days.
